Summer appears to be gathering momentum which means I’m wanting to spend less and less of my spare time indoors, in front of my iMac (as special as it is!) performing ‘favours’ for friends who have tried to undertake a DIY website and found that it’s not quite as easy as first expected!

I came across this very informative post today that I will be sharing with my aforementioned friends as part of my ‘Website Starter Pack, Intermediate Edition’ (working title!) along with a professionally designed web template (.dwt) so that they are able to continue on their quest for a DIY website (with a little help from their friend!).

The post mentioned was made on www.hongkiat.com and although titled “20 Useful CSS Tips For Beginners“, there are also some snippets of info of use for the intermediate web designer too.

HTML Email

Having recently created an HTML email newsletter campaign (make sure you sign up to our updates from the box on the right!), I thought it was perhaps appropriate that I share some of my experiences in creating such campaigns. Designed well, HTML email is, debatably, a very powerful and cost-effective way of reaching your target audience. Many web purists believe that HTML email is, indeed, the work of Il Diabolo himself. I, however, don’t share that view and think that customers and clients respond much more positively to colour and interest against plain text. That is, of course, my personal view. HTML emailing is hard work, and the margin for error is slim. Because different email clients render incoming mail differently, you have to minimise the pitfalls rather than maximise the impact. In other words, don’t assume that if it looks fantastic and pretty when leaving your Microsoft outbox that it will look tip-top when it arrives in your recipient’s Gmail or Mac Mail inbox. (more…)

With Apple’s brilliant new version of iWork, quick transition effects can be exported as .mov files then added into Flash as .flv additions. Not satisfactory for a bespoke flash design but great for a quick fix and an impatient client!
